This Acer AJ17 Monitor came in with the complaint of wide screen and distortion (line swimming) throughout the vertical line of the display. Although you may adjust the horizontal size, you just can’t make it into littler and the horizontal size still big and curve inward. You could likewise without doubt or question see all the vertical lines at the display have a little wave (distortion) throughout it. At firstborn I thought it was caused by a defective filter capacitor at secondary side of the display but all the capacitors checked to be okay.

Since all the caps tested okay, now I to the full or entire extent concentrate on the horizontal size and pincushion circuit area. If there are any constituents shorted or faulty in this area, it will cause the display to go huge (wide) and numerous times you can’t tune it back to normal size. From experienced, for the most part the problem was the modulation diode that have shorted or a pincushion transistor that have leaked. But both elements and all the nearby circuit elements checked to be okay too. Using high voltage probe to test on the anode voltage proved it to within the right range. For your information, if the holddown or safety capacitor capacitance value out it could also cause the display to turn huge but of course the high voltage measured at the anode cap would be higher.

Since all the suspected constituents measured okay, I would then use voltage testing to locate the fault. Just before doing the voltage test, I observed that the eeprom ic is installed just underneath the picture tube. If any eeprom ic in any monitor located under the belly of the CRT, then prospects are high the selective information would be corrupted by the discharge of the CRT.

If you repair a heap of of the latest model of Samsung Monitor, you will grasp why because the Samsung monitor had a piece of aluminum shielding to protect the microprocessor and eeprom IC from being discharge onto it. A corrupted eeprom info could cause the micro processor to output a wrong signal to sure or all circuit. If it send a defective signal to the DPMS circuit, then the monitor will shutdown once the power is on.

The ACER AJ17 eeprom IC share number was 24C08. I applied to keep good eeprom selective information in my hardisk for future use just in case if there is a need to reprogram the eeprom IC. I took out the eeprom IC from the board and insert it to the center socket of the pony prog eeprom serial programmer. I then connect it to the serial port of my computer and commence to look for the good selective information for this model. I do keep a lot of ACER monitor eeprom IC data. Once I got it, I overwrite the old data with the good data.

Installing back the eeprom IC took only a while and the Monitor was swapped “on”. Guess what? Not only the horizontal size now got back to normal, the distortion at the vertical lines vanished too. You better believe it that a corrupted eeprom IC could cause some weird symptoms. For some monitors, once the eeprom IC have been programmed, even though the monitor work, the color may run. Some techs are good in altering the code in the info and tune to the desire colors.

In order to make the new reprogrammed eeprom data last longer, you may add a piece of shielding on top of the EEprom IC to prevent any loss info in the future. Bare in mind that, eeprom info loss not only occurs in monitor, it could take place in other electronic instrumentation too such as LCD Monitor, Television, UPS and etc. Whether you are repairing the ACER AJ17 or any other brand of Monitors, if you come throughout any weird difficultnesses that you can’t solve, try reprogramming the eeprom IC and who knows the monitor may work again. In order to do this, of course you need a serial programmer which you may effortlessly buy one from the internet.

4Looks great, no HDMI port.
By Soda’s vids
You’ll need a HDMI to DVI adapter for this monitor, which stretchings a regular VGA picture to widescreen (from an old computer). So make sure your video card may handle a widescreen monitor (any newer computer must be fine) and get the adapter available on amazon for three dollars or so. Looks good. I picked this monitor out in the store without any background info because I thought it is picture looked better than the other monitors on display. (It dosn’t have the HDMI port because it dosn’t come with speakers; you’ll have to have a distinguished audio out on your computer/device or get a splitter.) P.S: It has a *really* bright white background!

4Great monitor
By ykza5
I got this monitor on black fryday in truth cheap, and I have to say it was a in truth good price, this monitor is good in each way, I’m a gamer and watch the ocassional HD movie, and in both I have to say the monitor gets the occupation done

The luminance and contrats I’d say for my test come a bit to high but that’s a matter of tweaking it a bit, it’s very simple.
The picture is genuinely sharpd and clear, I’m upgrading from a 17″ LCD and I may in truth see the diference amongst LCD and LED, the monitor is likewise very thin so I got a bit more space up the back of it, and if you are taking it someplace (wich I did) it’s very light to carry.

The only downside (that’s why I give 4 stars) it is that it doesn’t have HDMI port, you may get DVI to HDMI but I don’t recognise if the quality would be the same.

Overall great monitor, if you’re looking to buy an LED with good picture at an afordable price this is the one.

5great product
By Timothy B, Anderson Jr.
love this screen. great picture quality. better then my LG and my other Acer monitor. i use this as my main monitor in my dual screen setup. my other monitor is just a 17 inch Acer i use for instructional videos (i do online schooling) this is the monitor i use for everything else. has a VGA port, and an HDMI port. it’s very slim so they use a power brick rather of a regular power cable most monitors and TV’s use. had i known that i don’t know if i’d buy another as i don’t like power bricks. but overall this is a outstanding product. shipped perfective with no dead pixels or any other type of defect.
